DUMAGUETE CITY: The number of dengue cases in Negros Oriental was pegged at 2,232 with 11 deaths in 2022, a health official said on Wednesday.
Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Liland Estacion said in a press briefing this is 178 percent higher than the figures of the previous year.
In 2021, only 803 dengue cases and no deaths were reported — a relatively low number which health officials in the province attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.
The top five areas in Negros Oriental with the highest number of dengue cases last year were Canlaon City with 288 cases; Dumaguete City, 266; Guihulngan City, 224; La Libertad, 207; and Bayawan City, 180.
The 19 municipalities and one other city also reported dengue cases during the year with Basay town having the lowest number of infections at 18.
Meanwhile, the 11 mortalities were from Guihulngan City with three; Bayawan City, two; Basay, Dumaguete City, Sta. Catalina, Tanjay City, Siaton and Bais City with one each.
The last death due to dengue was reported on Nov. 30 in Barangay Hibaiyo, Guihulngan City.
The oldest among the deceased was a 73-year-old woman from Tanjay City and the youngest, a four-month-old baby boy from Basay.
