Accra:Negros Occidental The provincial government has reaffirmed its dedication to preserving the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Conservation Area (NOCWCA) as it marks its 10th anniversary as a Ramsar Site. The wetlands were designated as the Philippines' seventh Wetland of International Importance on October 20, 2016.
According to Philippines News Agency, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson emphasized the importance of continued commitment to wetland and wildlife protection in his recent message. The anniversary celebrations included the unveiling of Ramsar markers in Pulupandan and Valladolid, part of the Negros Occidental Coastal Wetlands Area Management Alliance, which spans 10 local government units.
The alliance, which includes cities like Bago, Himamaylan, and Kabankalan, and municipalities such as San Enrique and Pontevedra, among others, manages 109.52 kilometers of coastline across 52 coastal barangays. NOCWCA's biodiversity supports local livelihoods and serves as a critical habitat for threatened species and migratory birds.
In 2021, NOCWAMA was recognized in the Galing Pook Awards for innovative practices, and in 2023, it received a special citation from the Para El Mar Awards. Governor Lacson credited these achievements to the collective efforts of all alliance members and partners.
