Manila: The Philippine government officially launched the new digital National Senior Citizen ID (NCSID), integrated into the platform eGovPH app, that is expected to benefit some 12 million elderly in the country. The National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), together with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), led the launch at The Manila Hotel on Friday.
According to Philippines News Agency, NCSC Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer Mary Jean Loreche emphasized the significance of the digitalized senior citizen ID as a symbol of inclusivity for the elderly. In her opening speech, she highlighted that the ID would simplify access to government services, ensuring that senior citizens feel valued by the government.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda explained that the NCSID will be integrated into the eGovPH super app, the government's central digital platform offering a variety of services accessible anytime and anywhere. He noted that approximately 8.4 million Filipinos have registered for the national ID, with about 1.2 million being elderly. For those already registered with the national ID system (PhilSys), the digital version of the senior citizen ID will automatically appear upon reaching age 60, streamlining the process and eliminating the need for physical visits to multiple offices.
Loreche acknowledged the challenges related to internet connectivity and technical knowledge among the elderly. To address these, the NCSC plans to implement a nationwide information campaign and digital literacy training. Information officers will be deployed in various local government units to assist those who wish to download and access the app.
In terms of internet connectivity, Aguda assured the public that the DICT is actively working to enhance access, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. He noted that the department is rolling out connectivity and free WiFi initiatives, with the aim of ensuring nationwide access to the app by the end of next year.
The NCSC stated that by integrating the NSCID into the eGovPH app, the government is reinforcing its commitment to creating a more accessible, inclusive, and digitally empowered nation, ensuring that no citizen, regardless of age, is left behind.
