Quezon city: The National Food Authority (NFA) announced it is preparing to file a plunder case against a middle-level employee accused of misappropriating around PHP53 million worth of rice and palay stocks, as the agency enforces a wider crackdown on corruption. In a press briefing on Friday, NFA Administrator Larry Lacson stated the agency has intensified internal audits in line with the directives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. to eliminate misconduct.
According to Philippines News Agency, Lacson revealed that since last year, the agency has already filed 35 administrative cases, issued 28 preventive suspensions, and served 99 show-cause orders. Lacson emphasized the agency's commitment to eradicating corruption, stating, "We will not stop fighting corruption and that is because of the mistakes of our, only a few who have lost their way."
Lacson further explained that the major focus of their efforts is the imminent filing of a plunder case against one specific employee. He noted that the process of case build-up is nearly complete, and the discrepancies, which accumulated over multiple years, were discovered through strengthened audits initiated after he assumed office last year.
The shortages, according to NFA findings, accumulated between 2020 and 2021. The intensified audits revealed significant discrepancies, prompting the decision to proceed with legal action. The accused employee, whose details remain undisclosed, was given an opportunity to explain the shortages but failed to provide a satisfactory response.
Although the employee remains active, they have been reassigned and no longer hold any position with access or authority over stocks. Lacson highlighted the importance of gathering sufficient evidence, stating that building a strong case takes time and requires thorough documentation.
Lacson reaffirmed the agency's dedication to accountability, stating, "We will not condone mistakes or foolishness. NFA is not their playground, and we are serious about fixing it, and in support of the call of the President and Secretary Kiko for good governance."
