Manila: The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced on Friday that it has officially taken over the ownership, operations, and maintenance of the Caticlan-Unidos 69kV line. This line, located near the Caticlan Airport, was previously under the management of the Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO).

According to Philippines News Agency, this transition follows a decision by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on November 21, 2024, which reclassified the line as a transmission facility rather than a sub-transmission asset. NGCP explained that this reclassification means that once the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138kV Line is completed, the existing 69kV line will serve a transmission function and officially be transferred to NGCP's control.

The Caticlan-Unidos line has faced challenges such as corrosion from water wave splashes and salt spray, leading to power outages in the area it serves. A certificate of turnover was signed on November 21, 2025, but NGCP has not yet issued a certificate of acceptance due to outstanding issues, including the need for replacement of lines and poles and incomplete right-of-way (ROW) documentation.

Prior to assuming management, NGCP implemented temporary solutions like establishing a bypass line to address the damaged transmission infrastructure. The company is also fast-tracking the completion of the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138kV Transmission Line project, which is intended to serve as the new backbone for the region's power supply.

NGCP acknowledged the difficulties posed by the condition of the infrastructure it inherited, particularly highlighted by recent brownouts. "With the line now under NGCP, we are mobilizing our full technical and financial resources to implement immediate, medium-term, and long-term solutions," NGCP stated. "Our teams are working around the clock to ensure reliable power for the province."
