The national grid corporation of the philippines (ngcp) has extended the yellow alert status for the visayas grid by an additional hour:he National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has extended the yellow alert status for the Visayas grid by an additional hour, now spanning from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., due to an unexpected outage at the Cebu Private Power Corporation (CPPC) Unit 10 and reduced capacity at the Leyte A Geothermal plant.

According to Philippines News Agency, the CPPC Unit 10 typically provides around 6.3 megawatts (MW), and the Leyte A Geothermal plant has seen its output decrease from approximately 328 MW to 312 MW. This situation has resulted in the grid's available capacity being approximately 2,462 MW, while peak demand is estimated to reach 2,262 MW.

Earlier statements from NGCP identified the forced outages of several key coal-fired power plants as the cause of the yellow alert status. These plants include Therma Visayas Inc. (TVI) Units 1 and 2, Unit 1 of Kepco SPC Power Corp. (KSPC) in Cebu, and Unit 1 of the Cebu Energy Development Corporation (CEDC). These outages, along with more than 20 other plants that have been on forced outage since as far back as 2021, and 16 additional plants operating at reduced capacities, have collectively constrained the grid's overall capacity.

The yellow alert status is declared when a power grid's operating margin is insufficient to meet contingency requirements. Despite these challenges in the Visayas, NGCP reported that the Luzon grid remains under normal conditions, even as it deals with the effects of Tropical Depression Luis. NGCP has implemented measures to mitigate the impact of Luis on transmission operations and facilities, such as ensuring reliable communication equipment, maintaining hardware materials and supplies necessary for repairs, and strategically positioning line crews for quick restoration efforts.
