NMP and Asian Cultural Council Unveil ‘Layers and Shadows’ Exhibit Featuring Optical Illusions

Manila: The National Museum of the Philippines (NMP), in collaboration with the Asian Cultural Council (ACC) Philippines, has inaugurated a new exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibit, titled 'Layers and Shadows,' showcases 14 artworks by contemporary Filipino artist Demi Padua, renowned for his expertise in trompe l'oeil, a visual art technique that creates realistic, three-dimensional illusions using light, shadow, and texture.

According to Philippines News Agency, the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the exhibit was led by First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, alongside NMP Board of Trustees Chairman Andoni Aboitiz, NMP Director General Jeremy Barns, ACC Philippines Foundation Chairman Ernest Escaler, ACC Global Chairman Josie Cruz Natori, and the artist Padua. The event also featured a special dance performance by 2023 ACC Philippines grantee JM Cabling, adding a dynamic element to the evening.

Aboitiz highlighted the importance of the partnership, noting the significant contributions the ACC has made towards fostering intercultural understanding across Asia, including the Philippines. Meanwhile, Escaler emphasized their organization's dedication to broadening the scope and vision of local artists across various fields, from visual arts to arts management.

Artist Demi Padua expressed that the exhibition is both personal and purposeful, serving as a testament to the transformative power of art and the resilience of the human spirit. 'Layers and Shadows' is open to the public at the President Sergio Osme±a Hall on the 2nd Floor of the National Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition runs from August 13 to 26, with daily visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering free admission.
