No Sacred Cows in Probe into Missing ‘Sabungeros’ Case: Palace

Manila: No one will be spared in the investigation into the case of the disappearance of 'sabungeros' (cockfight aficionados), Malaca±ang said on Thursday. This announcement follows the serious allegations made by Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan, also known as 'Alyas Totoy,' who implicated business tycoon Charlie "Atong" Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto in the abduction and murder of over 100 sabungeros.

According to Philippines News Agency, when asked if President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a new directive following the latest revelation, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the case will be handled by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and other law enforcement agencies. Castro emphasized that President Marcos would not show favoritism, despite the involvement of influential personalities in the case of the missing sabungeros.

Castro reassured the public that the President and his administration are committed to ensuring justice. 'Sinuman, ano man ang katayuan sa buhay, kung sila man ay personalidad na kinikilala, wala pong sisinuhin ang Pangulo at administrasyon (Whoever they are, whatever their status in life, whether they are prominent personalities, the President and the administration will not spare them),' she stated. She added that accountability is crucial, and a thorough investigation is necessary to deliver justice to the families of the missing sabungeros.

When questioned about the possibility of Patidongan becoming a state witness, Castro indicated that it would depend on the DOJ's evaluation. She mentioned that potential state witnesses must demonstrate the courage and determination to speak the truth. And who are the other witnesses that can be made state witnesses. That depends on their courage, the truth that they will tell, and the opportunity that they will have to recant their testimonies).'

In response to the allegations, Ang has denied any involvement and has filed charges against Patidongan on Thursday morning, accusing him of attempting to extort PHP300 million.
