Manila: Senate President Win Gatchalian stated that Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano is not obligated to inform the Senate leadership about his reported overseas trip if it is personal. Gatchalian emphasized that formal clearance is only necessary for official travel involving Senate resources.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian mentioned in an interview at the Senate that he had no official confirmation of Cayetano's departure. He clarified that personal trips do not require Senate notification. Gatchalian outlined that travel authority is only needed for official trips funded by the Senate, covering expenses like airfare, accommodation, or staff.

When questioned about Cayetano's leave status, Gatchalian noted the absence of a leave notice but reiterated that private trips do not mandate such a filing. He added that he last conversed with Cayetano about pending bills during a session and has not discussed the trip with him since.

Gatchalian distinguished Cayetano's situation from Senator Loren Legarda, who is on medical leave without salary. Senate President Pro Tempore Vicente Sotto III echoed that senators are not required to seek permission for international travel.

Senator Panfilo Lacson also remarked that Cayetano's travel is not an issue, as personal trips do not necessitate Senate President approval. Lacson mentioned receiving information suggesting Cayetano's trip to Singapore might be health-related and expressed well wishes for him.

The Bureau of Immigration confirmed that Senators Alan Peter and Pia Cayetano are currently abroad, with no court-imposed hold departure orders against them. The bureau noted compliance with the Data Privacy Act, restricting disclosure of specific travel details.
