NPC Condemns Arrest of Journalist Philip Lustre Jr., Highlights Press Freedom Concerns

Quezon City:The National Press Club (NPC) has strongly condemned the arrest of veteran journalist and author Philip Lustre Jr., voicing serious concerns about the circumstances of his arrest and its implications on due process, press freedom, and the protection of journalists.

According to Philippines News agency, Lustre was arrested by police officers shortly after attending the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City. The arrest was based on a cyberlibel warrant reportedly issued by a court in Davao City.

Lustre's legal counsel noted that he had not been informed of the complaint or case that resulted in the warrant's issuance. The NPC emphasized the need for transparency and proper adherence to legal procedures when implementing warrants, ensuring respect for the individual's rights.

While acknowledging the authority of courts and law enforcement to enforce the law, the NPC insisted that such actions must comply with due process and constitutional safeguards. The organization expressed concern over the use of cyberlibel provisions against journalists, highlighting the potential chilling effect on free expression and public-interest reporting.

NPC president Mina Navarro urged authorities to provide a clear and transparent explanation regarding Lustre's arrest, ensuring his constitutional rights and access to legal remedies are fully respected. The NPC reiterated that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy, emphasizing that journalists must operate without intimidation or undue pressure, and legal processes should not be used to suppress legitimate journalism or silence critical voices.
