Manila: The National Privacy Commission (NPC) is calling for an increase in privacy awareness among social media users, emphasizing the responsibility of content creators who use online platforms as income sources. Deputy Privacy Commissioner Juan Paolo Fajardo highlighted the importance of safeguarding personal information and respecting the privacy of others.

According to Philippines News Agency, Fajardo stressed that influencers and active social media users should set examples of responsible online behavior. He noted that individuals must refrain from sharing others' personal data without consent or valid reasons as outlined in the Data Privacy Act. Fajardo made these remarks during the 'Safe Minds, Safe Online' child protection workshop.

Fajardo pointed out that it is crucial for individuals to be informed before their personal information is shared, even within households or school communities. He warned that seemingly harmless posts could have unforeseen implications for the individuals involved, emphasizing the need for respect.

The NPC is currently drafting a circular to clarify data subjects' rights and the responsibilities of those handling personal information. Additionally, the NPC is collaborating with the Department of Education (DepEd) to create educational materials under the Kabataan Digital Program. This initiative aims to promote privacy awareness in public schools, targeting elementary and junior high school students.

Fajardo also encouraged children to consider the potential consequences of sharing personal information online. Increasing Filipinos' awareness of digital privacy remains a priority for the NPC, and public education efforts, particularly in schools, have shown promising results in this area.
