Ilocos norte: The National Tobacco Administration (NTA) in Ilocos Norte has announced plans to plant 90,000 forest tree seedlings in collaboration with partner-stakeholders as part of its synchronized tree planting project. Engr. Randy Abella, branch manager of NTA, confirmed the initiative following the distribution of production assistance to 10 farmer-cooperators in various locations, including Barangays San Pedro and Tabug in Batac City, Camanga in Badoc, Salanap in Pinili, Tangaoan in Piddig, Namoroc in Vintar, and Pulangi in Bacarra town.
According to Philippines News Agency, the production assistance provided to each farmer-cooperator is valued at PHP18,000. This assistance is aimed at supporting the establishment of a tree nursery, which involves activities such as sowing, maintenance, potting in soil media, pricking seedlings, and replanting. Abella mentioned that 10 tree seedling growers have been contracted, with each tasked to cultivate 9,000 seedlings. These seedlings are scheduled to be planted in July as part of the synchronized tree planting project.
The initiative by NTA is focused on restoring ecological integrity and promoting sustainability within the tobacco-growing regions of Ilocos, Cagayan, and Cordillera. This project is set to be a significant feature of NTA's 39th anniversary celebration in July. The seedlings being cultivated include species like Gmelina, Kakawate, Ipil-ipil, and Falcata, which are known for their rapid growth. These trees are intended to supply a sufficient source of fuelwood and other resources required for tobacco curing, while also offering an additional income stream for tobacco farmers.
The tobacco industry continues to be a crucial cash crop in Northern Luzon and is noted as one of the largest consumers of fuelwood in the tobacco-growing areas.
