NTF-ELCAC Executive Calls for Sobriety on Case of Fil-Am Rescued in Occidental Mindoro

Manila: A ranking National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) official has urged the public to approach the case of Fil-American Chantal Anicoche, who was rescued by Army troopers in Occidental Mindoro last Jan. 8, with sobriety, restraint, and a clear sense of responsibility. "This is not a matter for spectacle or online trial. This is about the safety of a young person, the integrity of our legal process, and the accountability of those who place young people like her in harm's way," NTF-ELCAC executive director Undersecretary Ernesto Torres Jr. said in a statement Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Torres emphasized that the priority is Anicoche's safety and well-being, ensuring she is safe, alive, and receiving appropriate medical attention. He stressed that all government actions concerning Anicoche have been conducted in accordance with existing laws, protocols, and the state's duty to protect life and dignity.

Torres further explained that relevant government agencies are coordinating as necessary, and due process safeguards are being upheld. He also addressed the various claims circulating online, including allegations of 'detention,' stating that facts will be established through proper documentation and verification, rather than through pressure or unfounded rumors.

Anicoche was reported missing after a clash between government troops and New People's Army (NPA) remnants in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro on Jan. 1. During this encounter, a female student who had turned NPA was killed.

A major concern for the NTF-ELCAC, as highlighted by Torres, is the involvement of young individuals like Anicoche, Jerlyn Doydora, and Stephanie Borinaga in conflict-affected areas. He raised questions about who facilitates their access and exposure to such high-risk zones under the guise of advocacy or solidarity.

For decades, recruitment networks linked to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front have perpetuated narratives that romanticize armed struggle while downplaying its human cost, Torres noted. He reaffirmed the task force's commitment to uphold human rights, due process, and transparency, including access to legal counsel and other necessary safeguards.

Torres concluded by emphasizing that misinformation does not protect the youth and only serves to obscure accountability. Genuine concern for young people necessitates honesty about recruitment practices and the courage to confront these issues directly.
