OP Budget Increases by PHP5.2 Billion for 2026 ASEAN Summit Preparation

MANILA: The Office of the President (OP) in the Philippines is set to receive an additional PHP5.2 billion in its 2025 budget to facilitate preparations for hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in 2026. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced the budget increase on Monday, addressing criticisms over the heightened allocation following the bicameral conference committee's decision.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bersamin emphasized the significance of the ASEAN Summit in enhancing international relations. He made these remarks during a press briefing at Malaca±ang shortly after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed the 2025 General Appropriations Act (GAA). The increased funding is seen as a crucial step in ensuring that the Philippines is well-prepared for the responsibilities of ASEAN chairmanship.

During the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, President Marcos accepted the regional bloc's request for the Philippines to chair the summit in 2026. This decision came after Myanmar stepped down from its scheduled chairmanship. The chairmanship entails organizing not only the leaders-level summits but also various other gatherings associated with the bloc.

Bersamin elaborated on the budgetary needs, stating, "So, ASEAN 2026 will be hosted by the Philippines, we needed to start the work now. So humingi kami after the submission of the NEP (National Expenditure Plan). Humingi kami sa Congress ng supplemental funds in addition to what we proposed for the OP sa NEP to the tune of PHP5.2 billion for 2025." He also indicated plans to request further funding in the NEP for 2026.

In preparation for the summit, President Marcos appointed Bersamin as the Chairperson of the ASEAN National Organizing Committee. This role involves overseeing the comprehensive planning and execution of the annual gathering, ensuring that it aligns with both regional and international expectations.
