Bicol: Over 2,287 sites in the Bicol Region are now providing internet access under the Department of Information and Communications Technology's (DICT) Free Wi-Fi for All program. DICT-5 Director Rachel Ann Grabador stated that the public can now enjoy free internet access in numerous public places throughout the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, the free Wi-Fi sites are available not only in national and local government offices but also in basic education institutions, hospitals, health centers, rural health units, parks, plazas, libraries, barangay reading centers, airports, seaports, and transport terminals. The DICT has also focused on initiatives targeting Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs) in Bicol, aiming to bridge the digital divide by providing connectivity to remote barangays.
The program is designed to enable communities to access essential online services in areas such as education, healthcare, disaster response, and local governance. This deployment forms part of the government's broader efforts towards digital inclusion, reinforcing their commitment to ensuring that no Filipino is left behind in the digital age.
The DICT-5 is utilizing wireless technologies, including Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite technology, such as Starlink, to deliver high-speed internet access to GIDAs. As of 2025, approximately 300 active free Wi-Fi hotspots in the region are powered by LEO satellite connections.
