Manila: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) announced on Monday that it successfully thwarted a smuggling attempt earlier this month, involving 3,004 pieces of ecstasy tablets concealed in a shipment labeled as "animal food." The tablets, valued at PHP5 million, were intercepted before reaching their intended destination.
According to Philippines News Agency, Port of Clark District Collector Jairus Reyes revealed in a delayed statement that the parcel, which arrived on June 4 and was valued at approximately PHP5.126 million, originated from Paris, France. It was intended for delivery to Taguig City. The interdiction was a result of information provided by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) about an incoming suspicious shipment. Acting on this tip, Customs examiners and PDEA operatives conducted a K-9 sniff test on June 5, which tested positive for narcotics.
A thorough physical inspection unveiled that the ecstasy tablets were skillfully hidden in four transparent pouches within dog food pellets. This tactic aimed to evade X-ray detection by resembling the shape and color of pet feed. Reyes emphasized that successful interdictions like this one are vital for protecting the health, safety, and future of every Filipino. By preventing harmful substances from entering the country, the BOC ensures the well-being of Filipino households.
Chemical analysis conducted by PDEA on the samples confirmed that the substance was methylenedioxymethamphetamine, classified as a dangerous drug under Republic Act 9165, as amended. Consequently, a warrant of seizure and detention was issued against the shipment.
BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio highlighted the importance of preventing illegal drugs from entering the borders, as it serves as a crucial defense line to keep them from reaching communities and causing harm. He reiterated that these efforts protect families and reinforce public safety. Rubio affirmed that, supported by President Marcos Jr.'s vision for a drug-resistant society, the Bureau of Customs will continue to act decisively and vigilantly in such matters.
