Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced the seizure of PHP579 million worth of contraband across the nation over the past three months, from Aug. 26 to Nov. 27. The announcement was made by PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., who detailed the types of confiscated items and emphasized the impact of smuggling on the economy.

According to Philippines News Agency, the seized contraband included PHP512.6 million worth of smuggled cigarettes, PHP1.29 million in petroleum products, PHP6.8 million in agricultural items, and PHP58.8 million in assorted goods. Nartatez highlighted the importance of combating smuggling to protect the economy and ensure fair competition for honest businesses. He assured that efforts would be intensified in collaboration with partner agencies to hold offenders accountable. The suspects involved are currently detained and facing charges.

During the same period, the PNP-Highway Patrol Group successfully recovered 432 stolen motor vehicles. This included 326 four-wheel cars and 106 motorcycles. The operations also led to the arrest of 113 individuals involved in carnapping, highway robbery, and 'rent-tangay' scams. In addition to vehicle recoveries, the police seized nine firearms, which are being used as evidence in 92 filed cases.

With the holiday season approaching, Lt. Gen. Nartatez urged the public to remain vigilant while traveling, particularly in light of increased traffic and vehicle rental activities. He advised caution when renting vehicles, as scams like 'rent-tangay' tend to rise during this period.
