Quezon city: The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) will soon establish a Doppler radar station in Bataan province. This development marks the first time Bataan will host such a facility, as PAGASA has been relying on the Subic radar for weather monitoring. The Doppler radar is recognized for its capability to detect various types of precipitation, thunderstorm cloud formations, along with wind strength and direction.
According to Philippines News Agency, PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando highlighted the importance of this new station, emphasizing that it will serve as a crucial tool for accurate weather forecasting. The memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the project was signed between PAGASA and the Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) at the weather bureau's office in Quezon City. The agreement, which is slated to last for 25 years, is currently pending final approval by the university's Board of Regents.
The MOA details that BPSU will provide approximately 1,500 square meters of land, free of charge, for the construction and installation of the radar and communication facilities. During the signing, BPSU President Dr. Ruby Santos-Matibag remarked that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to scientific advancement and public safety.
The agreement grants PAGASA authorization to begin the installation process upon finalization. Servando noted that the establishment of the radar station could take up to 18 months due to the overseas manufacturing of equipment and subsequent steps involving delivery, installation, testing, and training. Once operational, PAGASA will oversee the station's maintenance and operation at its own cost.
Additionally, PAGASA is committed to providing educational lectures to the community, including students, academicians, visitors, and other interested parties, as stipulated in the agreement.
