Pagudpud:Coconut shell craft makers in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte are innovatively repurposing agricultural waste into valuable products. These artisans are expanding their reach by creating eco-friendly handicrafts that promote zero-waste practices and a circular economy.
According to Philippines News Agency, around 120 local artisans are engaged in transforming discarded coconut shells into functional and decorative items. This initiative not only maximizes natural resources but also provides sustainable income opportunities for rural households. The effort is supported by various government agencies, particularly the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), which aids with machinery, training, product development, and marketing.
Elizabeth Benemerito, chairperson of the Del Mar Shellcraft Multi-Purpose Cooperative, expressed gratitude for the support received from the DTI. Initially focused on making souvenirs, the cooperative's products have improved and expanded, leading to potential export opportunities. Beyond crafts, the initiative promotes a circular economy by utilizing coconut resources to minimize waste.
Handicraft maker Daisy Jimenez shared that despite the challenges in production, the positive feedback from visitors encourages the artisans. The cooperative, established in 2007, has evolved from shell gathering to a diversified enterprise making various coconut-based products, including virgin coconut oil and coconut charcoal briquettes.
In September, the DTI showcased some of these innovative products at the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo, aiming to tap into a broader market. Mariane Joy de Guzman, a product development specialist at DTI Ilocos Region, affirmed that Pagudpud's coconut shell craft makers are ready for export. The artisans' work reflects their dedication to environmental protection, community empowerment, and responsible resource use.
