Manila: Malaca±ang has criticized Vice President Sara Duterte's recent allegations as a diversionary tactic intended to shift attention away from her own accountability issues, including those related to confidential funds and impeachment complaints. In a press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro responded to Duterte's claims that the impeachment efforts against her are part of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s strategy to remain in power.
According to Philippines News Agency, Duterte alleged that President Marcos and his allies considered her a threat due to her status as a frontrunner in the 2028 presidential race. She suggested that this perceived threat was the reason behind the efforts to remove her from office.
Castro emphasized that the Palace anticipated Duterte's tactic and urged her to address the issues raised against her. "Siguro po, nais din po nating malaman ang katotohanan at huwag lamang pong magtago sa naratibo na siya 'yung frontrunner para sa 2028 presidential election," Castro stated.
In addition, Castro criticized Duterte's emotional response to the scrutiny she has faced following her recent personal trips abroad, particularly to Australia. Castro questioned the Vice President's assurance that she was "still working" during her personal trip, urging Duterte to clarify the purpose of her visit.
Castro argued that Duterte should be transparent about the outcomes of her official duties performed overseas, highlighting the potential for confusion and conflict of interest. She stated that Duterte's admission of working as Vice President while abroad necessitates a detailed report to the Filipino people about her activities in Australia.
Duterte previously mentioned that Australia was under consideration by her father's legal team for his interim release from detention at the International Criminal Court. However, she denied any connection between her trip and this legal matter.
