Quezon City:Manila Malacañang has denied allegations that former House Speaker Martin Romualdez is receiving preferential treatment at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas, where he is being held in connection with an investigation into a flood control controversy.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro criticized the spread of misinformation regarding Romualdez's detention. Castro emphasized that such claims could harm the reputation of government agencies by undermining their efforts. She questioned the motives behind the dissemination of false information and urged the public not to contribute to these narratives, stressing that Romualdez is a significant figure under scrutiny to uncover the truth.
Castro addressed rumors circulating on social media about the alleged cutting of power supply at the New Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory, which purportedly disabled CCTV cameras and allowed Romualdez to leave the facility unnoticed in an ambulance. She clarified that the CCTV system is integrated with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), ensuring continuous monitoring of movements within the jail.
Initial reviews of CCTV footage by the BJMP reportedly showed no power interruptions or unauthorized movements involving Romualdez over the past month. The last recorded movement was his departure for a court hearing on October 12. The BJMP has launched an investigation into the allegations as of November 3.
Castro reiterated that all detainees are subject to the same custodial rules, with any external movement requiring a court order. She encouraged the public to provide relevant information and assured them of the BJMP's commitment to professionalism, transparency, and equal treatment of all persons deprived of liberty. Castro invited those alleging special treatment to inspect the CCTV footage at the BJMP to verify their claims.
