Manila: Malaca±ang has announced that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will endorse an anti-fake news bill only if it ensures a balance between regulation and the protection of free speech. The President emphasized that the bill should not suppress dissent or critical views.

According to Philippines News Agency, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the President addressed the issue during the recent Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting. The proposed bill, aimed at combating fake news and digital misinformation, is among 21 priority measures that are targeted for passage by June.

Castro highlighted, 'Ang sabi lamang po ng Pangulo. ay dapat pong balansehin. dahil baka po masagasaan iyong freedom of expression. Dapat mai-define mabuti kung ano po iyong sinasabi nating fake news at disinformation (The President said it must be balanced because freedom of expression might be affected. There must be a clear definition of what we call fake news and disinformation).' She further assured that President Marcos will not allow the proposed measure to be used as a tool to suppress freedom of expression or critical views against the government.

In addition to the anti-fake news initiative, President Marcos has prioritized other legislative measures including the abolition of travel tax, online child protection, the conduct of Bangsamoro elections, and political dynasty reform. Regarding the proposed anti-political dynasty bill, Castro noted that while the President has yet to endorse specific provisions, he will make a decision on which version to support once Congress completes its public consultations.
