Palace Orders Halt on SONA Preparations to Prioritize Flood Response

Manila: Malaca±ang on Tuesday ordered the suspension of all preparations for the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. This decision came after Marcos expressed dismay over reports of government personnel installing SONA-related materials in public spaces amidst heavy rains that have caused significant flooding in Metro Manila and various parts of the country.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos was particularly concerned about the allocation of resources to SONA preparations during a time when many communities are facing severe flooding. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin stated, "The President is dismayed by reports that government personnel are putting up SONA-related materials in public areas while many communities are battling heavy flooding." Bersamin made it clear that all SONA-related preparations are immediately suspended.

Bersamin further instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and relevant agencies to redirect their full attention and focus exclusively on flood response and relief operations. He emphasized that the President's directive is to prioritize the safety and welfare of the Filipino people, especially during crisis situations, and all government agencies are expected to comply.

During his official visit to the United States, President Marcos directed all concerned agencies to prepare for severe weather conditions and ensure the safety of affected communities. In a recorded video message, he urged key government agencies, including the DPWH, to coordinate closely and deliver timely assistance in response to the widespread flooding caused by the enhanced southwest monsoon.

As of press time, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the combined effects of Severe Tropical Storm Crising and the enhanced southwest monsoon have affected 362,465 families, or 1,266,322 individuals, across 2,088 villages in 17 regions of the country.
