The local police station here is now involving the community in preventing and addressing rape and sexual assault cases in this town.

Mangatarem Police Station chief, Maj. Arturo Melchor Jr., in an interview on Wednesday, said the Women Child Protection Desk of their station holds information dissemination for the women and children in the communities while the other members discuss with the men the penalties and other related laws.

“It is to discourage possible unlikely acts that might occur and prevent these cases from happening in the communities,” he said.

He added they focus their intervention on vulnerable families like those whose parents are working overseas or away from their homes.

“We are now implementing this measure,” he said.

Melchor said there were two rape cases recorded in the town last year.

“It is sad that most cases happen inside the home. We will not wait for the numbers to increase before addressing this,” he said.

He appealed to the parents to take good care of their children and monitor their activities and locations.

“Although the alleged abduction of young women in the province is a hoax, it is still important to be vigilant,” he said
