Pangasinan: Mayor Patrick Caramat of this town has ordered the formation of a Flood Resilience, Mitigation, and Management Council to tackle the ongoing flooding problem in the area. During a press conference on Wednesday, Caramat said the council will comprise members from the private, public, and business sectors, as well as experts such as engineers and architects, who will develop solutions to address the town's flooding problems.
According to Philippines News Agency, Caramat emphasized that the town currently lacks a drainage master plan, which contributes to the rapid accumulation and slow drainage of floodwaters. The newly formed council will also collaborate with relevant national agencies and stakeholders to develop and implement the planned projects.
This year alone, the town has experienced three flooding incidents caused by weather disturbances, leading to the declaration of a state of calamity. Recently, a section of the flood control dike in Barangay San Vicente was destroyed due to the swollen Marusay River.
"According to the Department of Public Works and Highways, they will draw funds for its repair from their quick response fund," Caramat said. He also mentioned that they are collaborating with the provincial government's River Restoration Project, with plans to begin dredging the river after the typhoon season.
