KUCHING, The inspiring offer of RM50 from the coach fuelled the spirit of tenpin bowlers Abg Yahya Abg Azhar and Nur Syazwani Marais to win the gold medal in the TPB4+TPB4 (intellectual disability) doubles event at the 2024 Para Malaysia Games (Para SUKMA XXI) today. The Sarawak duo had fallen behind in the fourth set when they were challenged by their coach Myron Khoo Hock Ming to catch up with their rivals. Abg Yahya said the reward he wagered paid off when they managed to end the six-set match on 2,244 pinfalls at Megalanes Sarawak in Emart Batu Kawa. "When we went behind, I was challenged by the coach (Myron) … he said if we can catch up with the opponents and play a 'clean game', he will give RM50. "The challenge made us stay focused during the match and achieve success," he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Abg Yahya, 26, who has represented the country in several international tournaments, said his involvement in bowling began when he was 12 years old. "A teacher at school started me on bowling, after th at I continued training with my uncle," he said. The silver medal went to the Selangor team of Muhammad Danial Azrai Zulkifly and Muhammad Hazmi Khairil Azri with 2,188 pinfalls while the bronze was also won by Selangor through Eliyana Johari and Syed Umar Syed Abdullah Thani (2,111 pinfalls).
