PBBM Advocates Unified ASEAN Strategy for Energy Security Amidst Middle East Conflict

Cebu: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has urged Southeast Asian nations to adopt practical collective measures to bolster regional energy security amid the economic pressures arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos addressed the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit Plenary, emphasizing the need for ASEAN to enhance coordination and preparedness in response to the volatility in global energy markets. He stated that ASEAN must unite to ensure a stable energy supply during these uncertain times.

Marcos highlighted that the escalating tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States have disrupted energy flows and transport routes, leading to supply uncertainties and increased living costs throughout the region. He stressed the importance of improving energy interconnectivity and accelerating the development of renewable and alternative energy sources to mitigate future shocks and address climate change.

Furthermore, Marcos underscored the significance of innovation and artificial intelligence in enhancing energy forecasting, grid management, and system flexibility. The Philippines, facing global fuel supply concerns, has already adjusted its ASEAN hosting through austerity measures and scaled-down activities after declaring a national energy emergency.

Beyond energy security, the President identified food stability and the protection of ASEAN nationals abroad as urgent priorities for the region. The ASEAN Summit in Cebu marks the first year of implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 under the Philippines' chairship theme, 'Navigating Our Future Together.'
