PBBM Commits to Funding Virology and Vaccine Institute Construction

Capas: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has pledged to secure funding for the continued construction of the Virology and Vaccine Institute of the Philippines (VIP) at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac. The commitment comes in response to the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) request for financial support to prevent delays and structural issues with the VIP Administration Building.

According to Philippines News Agency, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. informed President Marcos that approximately PHP680 million is needed for the VIP and its initiatives, which include developing vaccines for humans, animals, and plants. Marcos emphasized the importance of the VIP's establishment to prepare for potential global pandemics.

During a meeting with the DOST, Marcos discussed the agency's 2025 budget and upcoming projects. Solidum highlighted the lack of allocated funds for the VIP in this year's Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) spending plan. Marcos assured Solidum of his support, stating he would seek funding sources to ensure the project's completion.

Solidum explained that the VIP would not only address human health concerns but also tackle viruses affecting animal and plant health. He noted the increased interest from returning scientists eager to contribute, emphasizing the need for the facility.

The creation of VIP is a priority project under the current administration, as mentioned in Marcos' first State of the Nation Address. Once completed, the VIP will become an attached agency under the DOST, serving as a premier research and development institute in virology for humans, plants, and animals. The institute aims to provide a sustainable approach to emerging, re-emerging, and novel viruses in the future.
