PBBM: Gov’t Stepping Up Efforts to Boost Maritime Education, Training

San narciso: The government is undertaking major reforms to strengthen the country's maritime industry and ensure the preparedness of the next generation of Filipino seafarers, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said on Friday. During the commencement exercises of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy's (PMMA) Kadaligtan Class of 2025 in San Narciso, Zambales, Marcos cited key initiatives aimed at enhancing the training quality and global competitiveness of the Philippine maritime workforce.

According to Philippines News Agency, the President emphasized the importance of equipping future mariners with the skills needed to navigate the challenges of the maritime industry. He highlighted the National Merchant Marine Aptitude Test, which is designed to evaluate prospective students' readiness for rigorous academic and practical maritime training. This test ensures that candidates possess the foundational skills necessary for success in maritime courses at the tertiary level.

The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is working on a new ladderized maritime education and training program. This initiative aims to facilitate a smoother transition from non-degree programs to full maritime degrees, thereby increasing opportunities for Filipino seafarers. MARINA is also focused on expanding opportunities for onboard training, which is crucial for practical learning.

The Kadaligtan Class, meaning 'Kawal ng Dalampasigan, Liwanag ng Karagatan,' consists of 252 cadets. Among them, 144 are graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, while 108 are earning a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. Midshipman 1st Class Marc John Casta±eto from Llanera, Nueva Ecija, is the top graduate of the class.

The PMMA, founded in 1820, is a government-funded institution specializing in maritime higher education. It trains Filipino merchant marine officers who are set to join the Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine Fleet. These graduates will become licensed marine engineers and deck officers, contributing to the global maritime industry and enhancing the country's maritime defense.
