PBBM Seeks Wider Recognition of Filipino Professionals in Canada

Vancouver: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday (Canada time) hoped that Canada would address barriers to the recognition of the credentials of Philippine-educated professionals to enable more Filipinos to practice their professions in the host country. Following his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Marcos said the issue was important in unlocking the full potential of nearly one million Filipinos living in Canada.

According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos conveyed the Philippines' hope that Canada's federal and provincial governments would continue working together to facilitate the recognition of Philippine educational and professional credentials. He also welcomed Canada's recognition of the contributions of the Filipino community. Marcos expressed satisfaction that the Filipino community is appreciated for their positive role in Canadian society, economy, and government.

Marcos described the Filipino community as the 'heart and soul' of the newly established Strategic Partnership between the Philippines and Canada. He is scheduled to meet with members of the Filipino community on Friday as part of his four-day official visit to Canada.

Prime Minister Carney emphasized that the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent on Labor and Migration between the two nations would promote the migrant workers' welfare and ensure ethical recruitment. Carney acknowledged the significant contributions made by Filipino workers globally and across Canada, assuring that they will be treated fairly, work safely, and have their rights protected. Canada is the second host country that accommodates the largest number of overseas Filipinos.
