Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to halt the planned fare increases for public utility vehicles (PUVs) set for implementation on Thursday. In a video message, Marcos expressed concerns over the timing of the fare hike, citing the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and its impact on Filipinos.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos emphasized the importance of supporting Filipinos, especially commuters, during this period. He stated, "In my view, since we are still facing problems due to the conflict in the Middle East, I said that perhaps this is not the right time to raise fares for our people." He instructed the DOTr to suspend and defer the fare hike, stressing the need to assist commuters in these challenging times.

The directive followed an announcement by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board regarding fare increases of PHP1 to PHP40 for all land transportation modes, which were supposed to take effect on Thursday. President Marcos highlighted the struggles of the commuting public, primarily workers and students, who are already affected by rising fuel and commodity prices due to tensions in the Gulf region.

Marcos reassured PUV drivers that government support mechanisms are in place to help them navigate the challenges posed by the Middle East conflict. He assured transport workers of increased support to ease their difficulties, stating, "Transport workers should not worry because we will act quickly and increase support for you so that you will not have too much difficulty."

Additionally, President Marcos instructed the DOTr to implement nationwide free rides to ease commuters' financial burdens. He also mandated fare discounts for Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) passengers, along with toll road discounts to lower costs for motorists.

Marcos conveyed that efforts are being made to mitigate the conflict's impact on daily life. He assured the public of the government's continuous support and commitment to ensuring normalcy and safety in their lives, stating, "Please remember that your government is always here. We are constantly thinking of new ways to ensure that your lives remain normal, orderly, and safe."
