PBBM’s US Visit Strengthens PH Global Standing – Romualdez

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s official visit to the United States, resulting in a new trade and defense arrangement, has placed the country on a stronger footing in global affairs, Leyte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said on Wednesday. In a statement, Romualdez highlighted that the outcome of Marcos' discussions with US President Donald Trump laid a foundation for broader access to markets, deeper military partnerships, and more opportunities for Filipinos both at home and abroad.

According to Philippines News Agency, Romualdez emphasized that the visit was more than just an official working engagement. He described it as a statement of confidence, underscoring the Philippines' readiness to lead, compete, and stand tall among nations. He noted that President Marcos has demonstrated that the country's foreign policy can be principled and pragmatic, balancing the defense of national interests with the building of alliances that uplift the Filipino people.

During the visit, Trump announced a trade agreement and praised Marcos as a formidable negotiator. Romualdez, who is expected to assume the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 20th Congress, stated that the agreement would offer expanded market access for Filipino products and services. This is particularly beneficial for small and medium-sized enterprises aiming to expand beyond local borders.

Romualdez pointed out that the strengthened defense ties align with regional efforts to maintain security in the West Philippine Sea and neighboring waters. He stressed that the West Philippine Sea issue is about more than just defending territory; it involves fighting for the rights of Filipino fishers and ensuring peace and rightful access for future generations.

Romualdez also reflected on Trump's remarks as an indication of the Philippines' reasserted relevance in global affairs. He applauded President Marcos for not only gaining respect internationally but also using it to uplift ordinary Filipinos. He emphasized that effective diplomacy is rooted in tangible impacts, such as lower prices for goods, more job opportunities, enhanced border protection, and increased investments in communities.

In conclusion, Romualdez remarked that nations are not built overnight, and securing a seat at the table is crucial for shaping future engagements. He described statesmanship as a strategic process focused on steady progress and consideration for the people.
