Cebu: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) 7 (Central Visayas) has intensified its operations against 'colorum' or unlicensed motorbancas traveling with passengers without passing safety checks with authorities during the long holiday. Commodore Weniel Azcuna, the PCG-7 director, highlighted the dangers posed by these unlicensed motorbancas to passengers traveling to their home provinces to observe All Saints' and All Souls' Days without undergoing pre-travel inspections. According to Philippines News Agency, Azcuna urged the public to avoid patronizing unregistered motorbancas to prevent inconveniences when these vessels are apprehended by the coast guard while at sea. During his visit to Cebu City Pier 1 passenger terminal, Azcuna observed a continued influx of passengers aiming to catch trips to their home provinces for Undas observance with their families. He stated that Friday marked the second day of the Department of Transportation's Oplan Biyaheng Ayos Undas 2024, and the coast guard seemed well-prepared , with the pier area remaining manageable. He advised passengers to arrive two hours before their intended travel time. Azcuna also cautioned passengers against carrying prohibited and contraband items to avoid being flagged down, charged, and detained. Additionally, he recommended that travelers avoid carrying heavy baggage to minimize stress during travel. Col. Antonietto Cañete, chief of the Cebu City police, reported no untoward incidents as major cemeteries opened Friday for the influx of visitors honoring their departed relatives. Cañete visited Piers 1 and 3 to ensure the safety and security of passengers awaiting sea travel to their hometowns. Local police, stationed at the gates of major cemeteries, confiscated prohibited items such as lighters, knives, and other sharp objects. Cañete further noted that 2,000 police personnel were deployed to secure 15 public cemeteries and 11 private cemeteries in the area. The Bureau of Fire Protection, paramedics from the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and M anagement Office, and the Philippine Red Cross were also assisting local police in maintaining peace and order at the cemeteries.
