GEORGE TOWN, The Penang Public Works Department (JKR) is set to investigate and address the numerous potholes reported across the state, which pose risks to motorists. State Infrastructure and Transport Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said that the public can report potholes through official JKR channels like SISSPA, MyJalan, the JKR complaint email, and the JKR hotline. 'Penang JKR will take immediate action on potholes at identified locations. We are enhancing our district teams to monitor road damage and respond swiftly. Maintenance will be conducted following standard operating procedures (SOPs),' he said when contacted today. Zairil's statement follows a media report in which the Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) urged the state government to reassess road construction and maintenance standards. CAP President Mohideen Abdul Kader said their survey identified potholes and uneven surfaces on roads including Jalan Thean Teik, Jalan Paya Terubong, Jalan Jelutong, Jalan Perak and Jalan Bukit Gamb i. Zairil said that potholes can arise from various factors, including water damage that weakens road structure and subpar resurfacing by utility contractors, adding that these issues shorten road lifespans and accelerate deterioration, resulting in unsafe driving conditions.
