Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong have renewed their commitment to enhance bilateral relations between the Philippines and Singapore, with a focus on ensuring security and stability in Southeast Asia.
According to Philippines News Agency, the two leaders held a bilateral meeting at Malaca±an Palace in Manila, where President Marcos emphasized the importance of boosting cooperation with Singapore in priority sectors such as health, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, renewable energy, and environmental initiatives. These sectors are deemed crucial for the development of both countries and the region as a whole.
President Marcos highlighted the enduring and thriving relationship between the Philippines, known as the Pearl of the Orient, and Singapore, the Lion City, over the past 56 years. He underscored that the ties between the two nations extend beyond governmental institutions, flourishing through vibrant exchanges among their peoples, businesses, and educational and vocational institutions.
In his remarks, President Marcos stressed the need for "enduring collaboration with meaningful benefits" to aid Filipinos and Singaporeans in navigating a "complicated changing world." He described Singapore as a "trusted neighbor, a dependable friend, and reliable partner."
Prime Minister Wong echoed the sentiment, expressing Singapore's desire to further improve its relations with the Philippines, given their "vibrant and enduring partnership." He noted that this partnership, developed over many decades, has been strengthened through the tireless efforts of leaders and officials from both nations. In the face of a changing geopolitical landscape, Wong emphasized the importance of standing together.
Both leaders agreed to continue their collaboration as founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to uphold and advance peace, security, and stability in the region. President Marcos pointed out that regional stability and security have facilitated unprecedented growth and sustained development over recent decades.
He further mentioned that amidst uncertainties, ASEAN has set a fresh direction with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, aiming for a resilient, innovative, dynamic, and people-centered community. President Marcos expressed his eagerness to work with Singapore and other ASEAN members to turn this vision into reality.
