Manila: The Philippine Army is doing its best to ensure that the capabilities and skill sets of its units and personnel are up to par with today's modern technologies, its chief said Thursday. "We recognize that rapid advancement of technology has introduced new dimensions in warfare that demand structural adaptation. We undertook deliberate organizational adjustments to ensure that our structure, capabilities and doctrines remain aligned with the realities of contemporary battle space," Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete said in his speech at the celebration of the Army's 129th founding anniversary.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nafarrete emphasized that the PA's objective is not to replicate the capabilities seen in global flash points, but to establish a force rooted in the Philippine context, considering the country's archipelagic geography and the character of its people. "Every capability we pursue and every unit we organize is carefully evaluated to ensure it is relevant, sustainable and mission driven. We are building forces not for spectacle, but for purpose, creating specialized units that maximize new assets and refining doctrine that reflects our operational environment," the PA chief stated.
Nafarrete highlighted the evolution of the PA's tank battalion, which includes Sabrah light tanks, as an example of this strategic adaptation. "Through allied exercises, relentless training and doctrinal development, it is now a precise instrument of maneuver, delivering decisive combat power while leveraging our terrain," he added.
The PA is also progressing with the activation of their ground launch missile and air defense battalion, a significant step towards reinforcing the country's credible deterrence posture and ensuring swift, decisive responses to threats against Philippine sovereignty. "Our Army has withstood trials that tested the very limits of human endurance and resolve. In the crucible of conflict, we forged our identity. We prove not only to the world, but to ourselves that resilience runs in our blood. For 129 years, we remain the guardians of the nation, heirs to a legacy of valor and masters of resilience," Nafarrete expressed.
He assured that all Army initiatives and reforms remain firmly aligned with the country's national defense priorities and strategic intent, responsive to the growing complexities of the regional security environment and the evolving nature of modern warfare. "Modern warfare demands advanced technology. While investing in our people, we ensured they carried top quality equipment because a well-trained soldier with the right tool can be more effective in securing our nation," Nafarrete noted.
Additionally, the PA has enhanced its firepower, focusing on precision and timeliness. This includes improved targeting detection and battlefield networks that maintain the Army's capabilities as accurate, responsive, and effective. "From heavy weapons systems down to the individual rifles equipment, we completed key modernization projects that provide reliability and confidence in the field. We also deployed satellite-based communication systems to ensure secure and reliable connectivity, reinforced by the pace framework, primary, alternate and contingency emergency to keep our communications uninterrupted under any condition. Through these efforts, our modernization ensures that when we act, we do so with precision, speed and decisive effect," he concluded.
