Capas: The Philippine Army (PA) has taken a significant step towards enhancing its defensive capabilities by receiving an automated weapon system designed to mount .50 caliber machine guns from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The turnover of the system was held at the headquarters of the PA Armor Division in Camp O'Donnell, Capas, Tarlac.

According to Philippines News Agency, the locally designed Controller-Operated Battle Ready Armament (COBRA) enables Filipino troops to operate heavy weapons without being exposed to heavy fire. PA commander Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete emphasized that COBRA is not only a tool for national defense but also a testament to the Philippines' pursuit of self-reliance through science, technology, and innovation.

The COBRA system is a product of the research and development efforts by the DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC), following an agreement with the PA signed on November 23, 2022, for the weapon's development. The turnover event included a capability demonstration witnessed by officials from the PA, DOST, and the Department of National Defense.

In a statement, the PA highlighted that the development and manufacture of COBRA exemplify its collaborative approach in supporting the government's Self Reliant Defense Posture. The initiative aligns with the Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization program, aimed at providing soldiers with the necessary means and resources to effectively accomplish missions and support the military's transition to external security operations.
