Dubai: The Philippines is optimistic for a better showing at the Asian Youth Para Games, which starts Wednesday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
According to Philippines News Agency, delegation head Milette Bonoan stated that the tournament has become tougher since the 2021 edition held in Manama, Bahrain. "I hope that our performance will excel in the previous (edition) because the level of competition has increased especially in certain countries," she said. "It's more challenging this time." Bonoan noted the young age of the Philippine delegates, saying their potential for growth is "huge." "They are very inspired to really win," she added.
The Philippines, which won one gold, six silver, and two bronze medals in Bahrain, will be represented by 48 athletes who are entered in athletics, archery, swimming, badminton, wheelchair basketball 3x3, boccia, table tennis, goalball, and powerlifting. Anthony de Mesa, Edgardo Ochaves, Jodriel Piol, and Ian Sotelo, members of the 5x5 wheelchair basketball team that saw action in Bahrain, will be playing in the 3x3, which is making a debut in the event.
The Philippines will have two games on Wednesday, facing Saudi Arabia in the morning and UAE in the afternoon. Coach Vernon Perea emphasized the importance of executing plays effectively. "Execution of plays is important. If we could execute a solid defense, then I hope we can make it to the medal rounds," he said. "We're not thinking much of our opponents; more of ourselves. How we could run our plays the best we can," he added.
