PH Government Activates Emergency Support for OFWs Affected by Iranian Missile Strike

Rehovot: The Philippine government has activated emergency support measures after 14 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were caught in an Iranian missile strike that hit a residential building in Rehovot, Israel, amid escalating regional tensions. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has been working closely with the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv to ensure immediate response and assistance for the affected OFWs.

According to Philippines News Agency, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated in a news release that there were no fatalities, although four individuals were hospitalized. All 14 OFWs affected by the strike have received basic needs and financial assistance. Cacdac emphasized the ongoing efforts to provide necessary support as directed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who has prioritized the safety and welfare of Filipinos abroad, particularly in conflict-prone areas.

The DMW, in collaboration with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, is closely monitoring the condition of a critically injured OFW and remains on high alert for possible rescue or repatriation operations. Eight of the affected workers have been relocated to a safe shelter, while others continue to receive care from their employers. Additionally, one OFW has opted to stay with a friend for security reasons.

Cacdac reassured that the DMW would continue to enhance protection and assistance for OFWs affected by any conflict, particularly amid the tensions between Israel and Iran. He also mentioned that the situation in Lebanon is being closely monitored in coordination with Migrant Workers Offices and the Philippine Embassies.

On a related note, 18 OFWs safely returned to the Philippines on Monday, arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 in Pasay City. These workers, initially bound for Tel Aviv, Israel, and Amman, Jordan, were stranded in Dubai due to the temporary shutdown of major airports amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
