Manila: An official of the Federation of Philippine Industry (FPI) on Wednesday vowed members' strict compliance with the Philippine National Standards, and the group's continued cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
According to Philippines News Agency, FPI Chairperson Elizabeth Lee emphasized that adherence to the Philippine National Standards 'is non-negotiable.' She stated that only by strictly following these standards, particularly in cement and steel, can safe, durable, and resilient public infrastructure be ensured for the people.
The statement comes as the government intensifies its investigation into anomalous public works projects that not only compromise public safety but also deplete government resources significantly. Lee highlighted the federation's close coordination with DTI's Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) and reaffirmed the group's commitment to collaborate with all government agencies to uphold these standards.
Lee stressed the importance of guaranteeing that public infrastructure projects are built on quality, integrity, and accountability, which are crucial for sustainable nation-building and long-term growth. She also urged the Department of Public Works and Highways to enforce strict implementation and monitoring of these standards, particularly concerning building materials.
Strict compliance with the Philippine National Standards is essential to ensure the safety, durability, and resilience of the country's public infrastructure. Lee warned that the use of substandard materials in critical construction inputs like cement and steel compromises public safety, wastes resources, and undermines confidence in national development efforts.
