PH, QC Governments Receive Global Recognition at 2025 Open Gov Challenge Awards

Vitoria-gasteiz: The Philippines and Quezon City achieved significant international recognition for their efforts in transparency, civic engagement, and open governance at the 2025 Open Gov Challenge Awards during the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

According to Philippines News Agency, Quezon City was honored as the Regional Winner for Asia and the Pacific and received the Thematic Award for Civic Space. Meanwhile, the Philippines was awarded the Thematic Award for Open Contracting and received an Honorable Mention for its ongoing initiatives to enhance public participation and accountability.

In a social media post following the event, the Quezon City government expressed pride in receiving two awards, emphasizing their commitment to transparency, accountability, and public involvement. Mayor Joy Belmonte, who attended the summit, highlighted the city's recognition as a testament to its leadership in open government innovation, driven by inclusive policymaking and strong civil society partnerships.

The Open Gov Challenge Awards, introduced this year, aim to motivate governments and civil society organizations to propose ambitious reforms across 10 key themes, including anti-corruption, digital governance, fiscal openness, justice, and climate action. The OGP reported the submission of over 160 commitments globally, signaling a growing movement towards strengthening democracy through open and accountable governance. Aidan Eyakuze, CEO of OGP, emphasized the tangible impact of these commitments on improving lives, saving money, and rebuilding trust.

In addition to the Philippines, other national awardees included Nigeria, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine. At the regional level, Quezon City, Philippines; Tangier, Morocco; Nuevo Le³n, Mexico; and Zagreb, Croatia, were recognized. Thematic Awards were given to various entities, including the Philippines, Quezon City, Nandi, Kenya, and others. Honorable Mentions were extended to several regions, reflecting the global commitment to fostering open governance.
