Manila: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday marked the 58th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), emphasizing the Philippines' ongoing dedication to regional solidarity, cooperation, peace, and shared prosperity.
According to Philippines News Agency, DFA Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro reiterated the country's commitment to the principles of the Bangkok Declaration, which established ASEAN in 1967. Lazaro stated, "The Philippines remains committed to promoting a people-oriented and people-centered ASEAN, one that delivers real and tangible benefits to its citizens."
These benefits, as outlined by Lazaro, include improved access to quality education via ASEAN scholarships, enhanced disaster response mechanisms, better market access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and the promotion of tourism through increased regional mobility.
Lazaro also noted that the Philippines is set to assume the ASEAN Chairship for 2026, viewing it as a significant opportunity to influence ASEAN's future priorities. "We look forward to contributing to the region's collective future, one that is peaceful, secure, and prosperous," she added.
