Manila: The Philippine soft tennis team is scheduled to depart for South Korea next week to engage in an intensive training camp in preparation for the upcoming Asian Championships. The training camp, taking place in Sunchang City from August 24 to September 13, will see participation from national team members including Bien Zoleta, Princess Catindig, Airies Jean Tanawan, Christy Sa±osa, Bea Ysabel Ebriega, Shyryn Gybryl Salazar, Aira Jane Nuguit, Joseph Arcilla, Shant Raven Nuguit, Sherwin Ray Nuguit, George Patrick Mendoza, Adjuthor Moralde II, Samuel Reane Nuguit, Jason Ryan Caminting, and national training pool member Hilary Sophie Paas.
According to Philippines News Agency, the team will be under the guidance of head coach Michael John Enriquez, with assistance from coaches Josephine Paguyo, Wenifredo De Leon Jr., and Mark Anthony Alcoseba. Upon completion of the training camp, Aira Jane Nuguit, Shant Raven Nuguit, and Paas will return to Manila. Meanwhile, the remaining team members will proceed to Mungyeong City, the venue for the Asian Championships from September 13 to 23.
Zoleta expressed the significance of the training camp, stating, "The training camp is very important for us, we look forward to honing our skills before the tough challenge ahead in the Asian Championships." The team recently showcased their potential by securing eight medals at the Poland Cup, including one gold, four silvers, and three bronzes.
In the Poland Cup, Zoleta clinched a silver medal in the women's doubles alongside Princess Catindig, who also won two additional silver medals in the singles and mixed doubles with Sherwin Nuguit. Arcilla achieved a doubles silver with Mendoza and a bronze in singles, while Moralde II and Sherwin Nuguit earned a bronze in men's doubles, and Airies Nuguit secured a bronze in women's singles.
The national team also competed in the 2nd International Soft Tennis Tournament in Greater Noida, India, last March. Zoleta highlighted the team's optimism, saying, "The team's morale is high because of our performance at the Poland Cup. Hopefully, we can win medals in the Asian Championships. We will do our best."
Zoleta's achievements include being the third Filipino to win a bronze medal at the World Soft Tennis Championships, following Paguyo and Arcilla.
