Nagoya: The Philippines secured its first medal at the 20th Asian Games after the women's soft tennis team was defeated by defending champion Japan, 0-2, in the semifinals held at Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya, Japan.

According to Philippines News Agency, Bien Zoleta and Princess Catindig faced Rena Temma and Kiho Miyamae, while Christy Sanosa played against Ayaka Iwakura, both matches resulting in five-set sweeps. Despite the loss, the team celebrated this achievement as a historic moment for Philippine soft tennis, marking their first podium finish since 1994. Zoleta, previously a seasoned tennis player, expressed immense joy in a news release, emphasizing the significance of winning a medal at what they consider their 'Olympics.'

Soft Tennis Pilipinas highlighted the extensive sacrifices and dedication behind this achievement, noting the long-standing hope and love for the Philippine flag driving their success. Zoleta, who previously won a bronze medal at the World Soft Tennis Championships in 2015, hopes this accomplishment inspires other national athletes at the Asian Games.

Looking ahead, Zoleta will partner with Samuel Nuguit, and Christy Sanosa will team up with Sherwin Nuguit in the mixed doubles event on Monday, followed by the women's and men's singles events starting Tuesday.

In related developments, Jean Claude Saclag and Carlos Alvarez have secured bronze medals in the men's traditional mixed martial arts, advancing to the semifinals. Saclag triumphed over Saud Fawaz Almolhem of Saudi Arabia in the -65kg quarterfinals, while Alvarez defeated Ananda Prabowo of Indonesia in the -77kg division.
