Pasig City: The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and Thailand's National Health Security Office (NHSO) have taken a significant step towards improving healthcare systems in both countries by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing financial coverage for in-patient cases. According to Philippines News Agency, the MOU was signed on Wednesday by PhilHealth President and CEO Emmanuel Ledesma Jr. and NHSO Secretary General Jadej Thammatacharee in Pasig City. This agreement focuses on the development of a Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRG) payment system, marking a transition from the current All Case Rates system used by the state insurer. The DRG system is a case-based payment approach that encompasses all diagnosis and procedure codes related to a specific episode of care, accounting for additional patient characteristics such as complications and length of stay in a facility. This new system promises a more accurate approximation of the costs associated with hospital ad missions, thereby enhancing health insurance coverage for patients and ensuring more appropriate reimbursement for healthcare providers. The move is expected to significantly impact the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery in the Philippines. Furthermore, representatives from PhilHealth and NHSO of Thailand participated in the 41st ASEAN Social Security Association (ASSA) Meetings held from November 25 to 27 in Parañaque City. During these meetings, best practices and challenges concerning social security in the region were discussed, fostering collaboration among social security institutions from countries including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
