Manila: Members of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) may avail of benefits of up to almost PHP30,000 for the treatment of schistosomiasis-related complications, as the country observes National Schistosomiasis Awareness and Mass Drug Administration Month this January.

According to Philippines News Agency, PhilHealth, in a public advisory on Thursday, stated that the benefit package aims to ease the financial burden on patients affected by the parasitic disease, which is commonly acquired through contact with contaminated freshwater.

Under the coverage, PhilHealth provides up to PHP29,250 for pneumonia in schistosomiasis, a serious complication of the disease. Patients diagnosed with schistosomiasis due to schistosoma japonicum may also receive benefits of up to PHP7,800, the state insurer said.

The World Health Organization notes that schistosomiasis is contracted when parasites known as 'blood flukes' penetrate the skin during exposure to contaminated water, particularly in areas infested with freshwater snails. Common symptoms include skin itching, fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and the presence of blood in stool or urine.

Health authorities warned that simple activities such as wading or swimming in contaminated water can put individuals at risk, especially in endemic areas. PhilHealth reiterated its support for national efforts to prevent and control the disease, including mass drug administration using praziquantel, participation in deworming programs, ensuring access to clean water, and avoiding contact with potentially contaminated freshwater sources.

The agency encouraged members to seek early consultation and treatment in accredited health facilities to fully benefit from PhilHealth coverage and prevent severe complications associated with schistosomiasis.
