Philippines and Cambodia Forge Alliance Against Transnational Crimes

Manila: The Philippines and Cambodia have formally agreed to collaborate in combating transnational crimes, including human trafficking and cybercrime, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday. Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn exchanged notes on this critical partnership during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s state visit to Cambodia on September 8.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos, who witnessed the exchange, acknowledged the pressing challenges that cut across borders, such as human trafficking, cybercrime, illicit drugs, and other transnational threats that affect the safety of citizens and the stability of societies. Marcos emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration among law enforcement and security institutions to ensure a swift, coordinated, and effective collective response.

In a news release, the DFA stated that the exchanged notes amend the earlier 2016 memorandum of understanding between the Philippine National Police and the Cambodian National Police. This agreement underscores the two governments' determination to address non-traditional security concerns, including human trafficking, cybercrimes, and other forms of online fraud.

Furthermore, Marcos and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet witnessed the signing of agreements on air services and cooperation in higher education. These agreements aim to strengthen people-to-people ties through enhanced connectivity and the development of human capital in Southeast Asia.
