Kazan: The Philippines and Russia are considering expanding cooperation in emerging sectors, such as nuclear energy, space technology, and artificial intelligence (AI), President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Thursday. This development marks a strategic shift in the bilateral relations between the two nations, as both leaders recognized the need to step up their collaboration beyond traditional sectors.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos and Russian President Vladimir Putin have acknowledged the necessity of broadening their cooperation. Marcos, in a media interview before departing Kazan, highlighted discussions around nuclear energy, space technology, and AI as areas of potential collaboration. He noted that while the Philippine-Russian bilateral trade has notably risen to approximately USD500 million, there remains room for improvement in their partnership.

Marcos pointed out that the level of trade and engagement in traditional areas between Russia and the Philippines remains low, attributing this to outdated methods of conducting business. He expressed optimism about shedding these old practices, which he believes will unlock significant potential for developing relations with Russia across various sectors. While no concrete agreements were finalized during his working visit, initial talks with business leaders identified several promising sectors for future investments.

Marcos emphasized the importance of identifying emerging sectors and initiating dialogue to foster more vibrant cooperation. He mentioned that the Philippines is transitioning away from Cold War-era alignments, embracing a multipolar world that offers expanded diplomatic and economic possibilities. Although no definite agreements were signed, the identification of sectors for further development is seen as a step toward enhancing trade, cultural exchanges, and other forms of bilateral engagement.
