Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has underscored the enhancement of the Philippines' agricultural partnership with Canada, following a significant high-level development meeting. This meeting, which took place in early November, involved DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and Canada's Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai.

According to Philippines News Agency, in a statement, Secretary Tiu Laurel expressed gratitude for Canada's unwavering support in achieving the food security goals set by the Marcos administration. He emphasized that Canada's role is crucial in bolstering the Philippine agricultural sector, highlighting the shared commitment to food security, value-adding, and technical cooperation as pivotal for the long-term growth of both nations.

Secretary Tiu Laurel also identified areas where the Philippines needs improvement, including agricultural logistics, cold-chain systems, and value-adding for value crops. In response, Randeep Sarai reassured Canada's commitment to these initiatives, referencing a CAD26 million investment package aimed at global agricultural advancement.

During the meeting, Canada pledged to support the cacao and coffee industries in the Philippines, while also focusing on enhancing climate resilience, strengthening regulatory capacity, and improving surveillance in illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Additionally, the Philippines expressed a keen interest in acquiring Canadian dairy genetics, semen, live animals, and engaging in information exchange regarding farm conditions and cow comfort.

Secretary Tiu Laurel further indicated that the Philippines is seeking Canada's expertise in expanding fortification to agricultural products, as the country moves forward with the construction of a new rice fortification plant.
