Manila:Department of National Defense Secretary Giberto Teodoro Jr. announced plans for the Philippines to acquire additional BrahMos cruise missile systems from India to bolster its defense capabilities.
According to Philippines News Agency, Teodoro made this disclosure during the 3rd Delhi Defense Dialogue, where he participated via video teleconference. He expressed pride in the Philippines being the first foreign country to acquire the Indian-made BrahMos system, renowned for its speed.
In January 2022, a contract was signed between former defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana and BrahMos Aerospace director general Atul Dinkar Rane for three BrahMos cruise system batteries, valued at PHP18.9 billion. Each battery typically includes three to six launchers, along with necessary monitoring, tracking components, and a logistics support vehicle.
The BrahMos missile, capable of being launched from various platforms such as ships, aircraft, submarines, or land, reaches speeds of Mach 2.8 and can carry warheads weighing between 200 kg to 300 kg. The system is intended to enhance the military's sea control and defense operations.
Teodoro emphasized the desire to increase the number of BrahMos units and adapt them to fit the Philippine environment. He conveyed gratitude to India for its trust and confidence in providing these advanced weapon systems, highlighting the significance of this partnership as a testament to mutual trust.
Additionally, Teodoro revealed that the Philippines is pursuing enhanced cooperation with India in space technology. Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has committed to this cooperation, offering opportunities for collaboration with the Philippine Space Agency.
The Philippines aims to provide a testing area for space technology and to utilize its local expertise in the field. The country is set to embark on the Armed Forces of the Philippines Satellite Acquisition Program, wherein India is seen as a key potential partner.
